HOMELAND LOVE – TÌNH QUÊ HƯƠNG

I.             INTRODUCTION

 

The song, Homeland Love (or Tình Quê Hương) of musician Đan Thọ had left a pleasant and deep mark in the mind of many people, especially people from Central Vietnam.   Up to today, it is still considered as popular product of the new music generation in Vietnam.

Musician Đan Thọ was born in 1924 in Nam Định Province. In 1954-56 when he was in Nha Trang, Đan Thọ based on a poem of the poet Phan Lạc Tuyên to make the song Homeland Love, which is one of the jewels of modern music (tân nhạc) of Vietnam. The other popular song of Đan Thọ is the Purple Afternoon (or Chiều Tím), which is based on a poem of the poet Đinh Hùng.

Your shirt has a fight faded color - Áo bạc màu đấu tranh

 

I asked you to stop for a while - Em mời anh dừng lại

Moonlit night wets the coconut leaves - Đêm trăng ướt lá dừa

Next to the pot of freshly boiled potatoes - Bên nồi khoai mới luộc

I promise I will tell - Em hẹn em sẽ kể

The simple countryside’s love - Tình quê hương đơn sơ

 

Old mother is like the sunshine afternoon - Mẹ già như chiều nắng

Missing her son who has not return - Nhớ con trai chưa về

The poor fields do not produce enough rice - Ruộng nghèo không đủ thóc

Poor garden has sparse silkworm - Vườn nghèo nong tầm thương

Sad alley has panic color - Ngõ buồn màu hoang loạn

Poor village is dilapidated - Quê nghèo thêm xác xơ

 

You the frontline soldier - Anh chiến binh tiền tuyến

Come to liberate my village - Về giải phóng quê em

So, all country bridges - Bao nhịp cầu đất nước

To link to home in the Central Region - Nối về quê miền Trung

 

You will be the brother of a flock of young children - Anh sẽ là anh đàn em nhỏ

Will be the mother’s son to save the village - Là con của mẹ giữ quê hương

So tomorrow the village will grow new life - Quê nghèo mai sẽ tươi mầm sống

Group of young children would cheer up in field of golden rice - Đàn trẻ thơ reo giữa lúa vàng
